My current studying goal – to stay on top of my Anki reviews while staying at my brother’s house. I’m here until Monday night and I don’t have to fall 450 cards behind like last time! I may not get all of my studies done this weekend but I vow to stay on top of Anki.
Anyone else studying?
Michael,
I’m kind of sort of doing it. I have a deck for sentences and two cards for each sentence. The first card tests the reading on all of the kanji included. The second card tests my comprehension of what is being said. (So the cards are Japanese and English, not just Japanese).
I also have another deck that just keeps growing and growing with various vocab words I pick up all over the place. All of the vocab from the sentences deck goes into this deck if I don’t already know the words. When I choose sentences to include in my sentence deck, I pick sentences that only have one or two new vocab words and grammar that I’ve already studied. The sentences help me practice things I’ve learned here and elsewhere but don’t have much practice with.
I pull my vocab and sentences from Jpod101, Maru’s blog (the cat who is famous from Youtube), DenshiJisho, and a few other random places. Some of it is native (blogs mostly) and other websites are for teaching Japanese (TextFugu and Jpod101).
Clear as mud? Sure. A good way of studying? No idea, but it’s working for me right now. :)
Hoss, welcome! Sounds like you’re doing great already. :)
Good luck with your studies!
~CassandraWow! You’re doing great! Keep up the good work! :)
Will, welcome to the forums! I think it’s awesome that you’ve already been to Japan. That should provide some extra motivation for your studies!
Good luck!
~CassandraNice picture!
Michael – this is my response to your question in another thread of how studies are going. ;)
July kind of sucked for me. I had family here and then I was staying with family. Then I was buried in Anki because I didn’t study at all while I was away from home and barely touched it while they were here. So I spent the end of July catching up on Anki and reviewing. I was surprised my retention rate was pretty high on everything but RTK. I regret having pushed so hard on it and then falling so far behind. I’m not relearning RTK but I’m spending too much time on reviews. My fault.
So… now I’m spending roughly 90 minutes a day studying plus another few hours listening to Japanese podcasts while doing things around the house. Just today I downloaded a new podcast to try, one about cooking. Hopefully it’ll be good!
Studying – Anki reviews take about 30 minutes. I’m relearning katakana, staying up with all the vocab (some from TextFugu, some from Jpod101, and some from native materials), and (still) trying to catch up on RTK. Then I listen to a grammar lesson on Jpod101 and a culture lesson there as well. I take notes, practicing my handwriting, and then add a bunch of vocab and any available sentences into Anki.
I’m trying to move into using more native materials but I still feel overwhelmed. There is SO much that I don’t know and I find almost all native materials are over my head. I understand pieces here and there and those pieces are getting bigger daily. Yay for progress! Right now I’m watching a movie with no subs. I understand the basic plot but miss out on a bunch of context in the dialogue. That’s alright; progress is slow but steady.
How are things going for you? I hope people are studying over the summer. This thread has been quiet for awhile. ;)
Sean,
Welcome! How much did you learn while in Japan?
TextFugu is a great resource! You’ll learn a ton. :)
Good luck!
~CassandraDon – welcome back! You can do it! :)
~Cassandra
Jon – welcome! Hopefully TextFugu will help you stick with it. :) It’s a great resource; just keep at it! You’ll make lots of progress.
Good luck with your studies!
~CassandraChris, welcome! It’s been almost a week since your intro post. How are things going so far?
Good luck with your studies!
CassandraI’ve been studying for over a year. While I feel like I’ve made great progress, I also feel like I should know more. There’s so much more that I don’t know compared to what I do! I haven’t had any big “lightbulb” moments, only a few “hey, I recognize that!” while watching or listening to spoken Japanese. Since RTK, I’ve also had an easier time learning vocab with it’s kanji. So nothing big, unfortunately. Maybe a big moment will happen eventually but for now I just focus on the small steps of progress.
Good morning and welcome to the forums! I’m excited to see another lady here. :) We’re being overrun by men! Good luck with your studies!
~Cassandra
Welcome to the forums! You do have a very diverse background. Cool! You can still learn Japanese, even with your busy schedule. Just make sure you study while you’re not working. Grab time here and there. It will add up! Better that than waiting until you have “more time” (like that ever happens in life) only to find out you could have been fluent years ago had you started. ;)
Good luck to you! You can do it if you really want it.
~Cassandra
No plans for myself, but I hope you have a great time!!
