I still feel like a beginner but not a complete beginner. It does get better! I get impatient with how slow my progress seems to be but at least we’re making progress, right? :)
Hi, Szilárd! Welcome to the forums. :) I think you’re the first person from Budapest. Cool!
Yeah, those transitive and intransitive verbs are kind of a pain. I’m hoping with practice they will come more naturally.
You have great goals! Good luck reaching them!
~CassandraHello, Emma! Welcome to the forums. :) I’m so glad to see more and more people learning Japanese! It’s such a beautiful language. If I might ask, why did you choose Japanese over other languages such as French or Swahili or Chinese?
Have you run your marathon yet? I can’t even imagine training for that long of distances. I like running, but I’m more comfortable with 5Ks. ;)
Good luck with your studies! Having a concrete work plan for Okinawa should help with motivation when you get frustrated.
Again, welcome and good luck!
CassandraAwwwwwwww. That was such an inspiring post! ;) Yay for aiming to get out of beginnerhood by the end of the year. I really do want to start understanding more without having to sit and carefully pick things apart. Practice, practice!
Are you sure you want あきらめる as one of your Ultimate Verbs? ;) There is no あきらめる-ing allowed here! haha Great job hearing and recognizing something in the wild!
Yeah, we’ll blame the writing system. ;)
I finished reviewing the na-adjective lesson today. I think I’ve got a pretty good handle on that concept now. Tomorrow night I’ll just be reviewing all of my due Anki cards. Sunday it’s on to the i-adjectives and pushing to finish Season 2 soon. The adverbs lesson is new to me as well so maybe I’ll finish that on Monday.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels way too beginner for native materials. lol I look at websites full of Japanese and my brain shuts down a bit. :P I’ll recognize things here and there but I feel grammar is my weakest point right now. I only understand basic sentence structure and most sentences are way too long for me to comprehend.
http://cookpad.com/ is really popular.
Unfortunately, I haven’t ventured into much Japanese cooking. I’m vegan so that limits my options quite a bit. Two nights ago I made a miso soup that came out pretty well. I also make a vegan version of gyoza that we absolutely love. Usually I make an udon noodle/bok choy/shiitake mushroom stir fry to go with it.
This is the gyoza recipe I make – http://www.veggienumnum.com/2010/01/vegetarian-gyoza/ It’s not authentic as it’s been adapted to a vegetarian diet. I think the stir fry recipe came from the same website.
Next on my list to try is onigiri and sushi. Last night we visited the local Japanese market and bought two sushi mats. I’m also going to try making several recipes (zaru soba, sekihan) that I copied out of the book Bento Box in the Heartland, by Linda Furiya.
What websites/books have you used?
Let us know when you get more content up so we can come check it out. Good luck with your project! It looks like fun.
Michael – I’ve thought about doing the Ultimate lists. There are still a couple lessons in Season 2 that I haven’t read yet so I thought I’d download the Ultimates when I get to them in Season 3. Hmmm… Do you feel the verbs list is helping? Are you doing any output? Any native materials?
When people here refer to RTK, they are just referring to RTK1. I don’t think anyone has tackled RTK2.
I went through the entire book as prescribed by Heisig. See the keyword, write a story, write the kanji, SRS it as assigned. Sheepy can probably answer the question better than I as he’s moved beyond RTK and is using it in the real world. I’ve been through all of the kanji but am trying to catch up on my overdue Anki reviews. :P
Good luck!
Hello! Welcome and good luck with your studies! :) If you’re aiming for N5 this December, you could definitely make it. :)
Chigun, you’re not the only one. I feel like I’ve been floundering ever since I finish RTK in early April. I don’t think I’ve made any forward progress since then. *sigh* Let’s just grab hold of today and not waste any more time. :) Good luck with your studying today!

Proofread, proofread, proofread… That would be my biggest piece of advice. :)
Good luck!
Welcome to TextFugu! That enthusiasm will take you far. :D
Good luck getting into the JET program! I hope you’re accepted!
I love to cook and eat as well. ;) What’s your favorite dish?
Good luck with all of your studies!
CassandraLemur – Best to just jump in and get moving rather than regret where you could have been. ;) There’s no way to change the past but you can do something about today!
Murasaki – Good luck with RTK!
Sheepy – If you could write up a post about RTK, that would be awesome. I’m kind of flailing a bit with the reviews and I know I’m not getting the benefit from it that I should be. Right now I’m not a good person to write a rah-rah post about it, even though I know it’s a great resource. ;)
Today I’m going to keep working on my RTK deck, trying to catch up with it. Also going to review na-adjectives. I flew through the adjectives lessons last time and feel really shaky on the concept.
