Shizurin, are you feeling like you know a lot but still have a ton to learn? That’s about how I feel these days. :)
Today’s studies – 30 minutes of Anki, read a news article, wrote an email, and responded to corrections from my lang-8 post. Someone was kind enough to explain her corrections IN Japanese so it’ll probably take another 30 minutes for me to figure out what she said. ;)
Today’s studies – finished half an hour of Anki, listened to a Jpod101 lesson, and wrote a lang-8 entry.
Hi Sven! Welcome! I’m glad you decided to get back to Japanese. :) Good luck with your studies!

Hi Thomas! Welcome! Why did you choose Japan as your trip destination? I’m always curious what attracts people to Japan. :) Welcome and good luck with your studies!

Thanks for that rundown, Michael!
Today, I completed… 30 minutes of Anki, wrote an email, and read an NHK news article. Good times.
So far we’re just exchanging emails. I get the impression she’s simplifying things for me because I have very little trouble understanding what she writes. There was one grammar point I wasn’t sure about so I asked. She explained and I ran across that same grammar point on Jpod101 that afternoon. lol. My emails to her are starting to get more complex but I run into the issue of not knowing enough grammar to say what I want to or knowing the grammar but blanking when I’m trying to write. It’s definitely worth the effort, though, once you have a basic grammar understanding. I won’t get better at writing if I don’t try…
That sounds like an interesting book; it’s great to hear that it has no romaji. Let us know what you think of it!

How are the goals going?
My February recap – 25.5 hours of active learning plus a bunch of Japanese podcasts and dramas. I have a language exchange partner now and she’s been correcting my Japanese (very useful). All in all, fantastic month.
Thanks for all the suggestions, guys! I’m contemplating things and implementing some changes, trying to switch over to more monolingual studying.
Ok, I’ll bite.
Mark – Why do you recommend ditching Core6k? Also, is there a specific reason you recommend putting English and Japanese in separate decks?
Michael – How far are you through Core6k? Do you think it’s helping? I can’t remember; are you reading blogs or books in Japanese? If so, does the Core6k help with that?
Joel – I’m so jealous! ;) I hope you have a great class.
BBvoncrumb – Did you have something productive to add? If so, please do. :) I could always use help even if it’s just to tell me that I’m an idiot because I don’t challenge myself in my studying. lol
I like the sentences on jisho. I can almost always find example sentences that incorporate the grammar I know/am currently learning.
My hesitation in going mono-lingual is that I don’t know all the words in the definitions of a Japanese dictionary. So the vocab word itself is new and the definition has new words. It seems circular.
Thanks for showing off sample cards. That is helpful. I am going to start adding sentences to the front of my cards. Especially the lousy leeches that are still giving me issues…
How do you switch to mono-lingual? I’m still using Japanese –> English but want to get away from the English translations as soon as possible.
Hi Sara! A Masters thesis in Creative Writing sounds very interesting. Good luck balancing everything! Please let us know if there’s anything we can help with in your Japanese studies.

Hi Andrew – welcome! When do you travel to Okinawa? Good luck with your studies and your karate training!
