BBvoncrumb? Angry? Nah… ;)
I think writing practice is good to include but it’s often hard to know where to quiz it. It used to be that basic copywork (not quizzing) was assigned in schools as part of the regular curriculum for elementary school. I wonder if that same concept would apply to adult education in a second language…
Don’t get so jaded against everyone. Some of us have stuck around and ask questions because we’re committed. :)
They should really be stickied or something…
Ask and thou shalt receive. ;)
Hi Rowen – welcome! I hope you are able to return to Japan someday! Welcome and good luck with all of your studies!
Cassandra
Miguel, I don’t think you are usually considered weeaboo for learning kanji. lol. Anyways, welcome and good luck with your studies!

Hi Bex! Welcome! It’s awesome to see more adults on this forum. :) I hope you’re able to visit Japan! Welcome and good luck with your studies!

I would stick to just hiragana or katakana for now. The dictionary should list one of those two options beside the full kanji.
Hey Missing,
I stumbled across another reference to Tadoku and thought I might join in for the next session. Did you ever write a post about how your experience went in January? Do you read without a dictionary or do you look things up that you don’t know? I’m curious how others have done it.

Hi Tulo! Welcome! What made you choose Japanese over French or Swahili?
Welcome and good luck with your studies!
CassandraHi Zan, welcome and best of luck with your Japanese adventures!

Welcome! It sounds like you’ll fit in great around here. ;)
How much free time do you have at school? A block of time over half an hour would be great for studying, and of course, the more time you have, the better.
Welcome and good luck with your studies!
CassandraHi Sefearion! Welcome! It’s good that you’re honest about your reasons for learning Japanese and for the things that hold you back. Knowing is the start of the battle. :)
I hope you’re able to find that motivation to make it stick this time! Feel free to post any time you need some motivation to continue.

I’ve been studying off and on for three years. I would label myself as Upper Beginner/Lower Intermediate.
I’ve used:
Japanesepod101.com
Textfugu
Remembering the Kanji by James Heisig (book)
Lang-8 for writing practice
Japanese podcasts downloaded from iTunes for listening practice
Downloaded raw Japanese dramas for watching/listening practice
Just recently I started emailing with a girl in Japan, doing a Japanese-English language exchange.
I’m (very slowly) reading blogs, children’s books, and a local newspaper in Japanese.
Many, many, many hours of Anki ;)Cassandra
Start studying now! Commit to at least 15 minutes a day and don’t allow yourself to miss a day. You’ll gain enthusiasm for what you’re learning and that will help motivate you to do more. Think about how much you have the potential to learn in the next year that you’ll be missing out on if you don’t start now. Consider yourself kicked in the butt. :)
Good luck with your studies!
CassandraLearning, Young, and Mature designations are how long they’ve been studied. If your Young percentage is around 98%, you’ve got great retention. You can expect Learning to be lower because you’re still trying to put the information into your memory. :)
Out of curiosity, what do you think you will try next instead of recalling both reading and meaning?
