I don’t really quite get why anybody would use these. If you have an old phone that is good for nothing but calls and sms then sure, but if that’s the case I’d just tell you to get a phone that isn’t pre-smartphone. The barrier is not that high for a half-decent phone that’ll run Anki.
No audio, no SRS, they can be lost (Anki stats kinda can’t) and if you forget to bring them with you you’re kind of screwed. I mean Anki isn’t technically online, only the syncing is, if you don’t have the Internet for a few days it won’t really make any difference. I assume the program is smart enough to work out the differences on its own, if not then it’s still not going to cause too much hassle.

My girlfriend and her mom both speak Mandarin and Japanese, it’s so complicated to speak.
I doubt I’d even bother if it was free. Rather read actual learning material than study tips and what not.
RTK is indeed boring as hell, but it is a good way to learn lots of kanji in a short timeframe. I hate it but I’m nearly done.
Read the Kanji is a good website for, well, uhh, kanji. I still think they need to add a way to learn single kanji only, as when they start introducing 2 new kanji at a time it gets difficult to remember them both, on top of the readings for the word. I think I’ll do very well when I start using the site again after finishing RTK. (RTK being the boring book, not the website of course)
I’m almost done wrapping up RTK. Reviews suck for this thing, whenever I’m at my girlfriends house I don’t do reviews which means after 3 or so days I end up having to do 300+ reviews. It’s painful. She’s in Japan till next month so I’m back to being a productive member of society. (for now)
Why is vocab such a big deal? It’s easy to learn new vocab, force yourself to ‘learn’ 10, 20 or 30 words a day by going over them in Anki for a short while then repeat this the next day, it feels like nothing is going in but a couple of days later you’ll be remembering tehm. Lots of vocab is child’s play.
and by learn I just mean force the words, you don’t have to remember them perfectly until many reviews later.
Something like this can be done within a few days if you skip learning kana and kanji, or even less if you just rely on a few written down phrases.
I got back earlier, it was kind of boring I thought. I’ll upload the pictures later on, I think you need to have a real hard on for anime and Japanese clothing to enjoy it the most. We didn’t stay for long…maybe 45 minutes to an hour, had much more fun trotting off around London instead. Very sunny weather on Sunday.

I think it’s very easy once you have learnt the kanji, you can just identify which word it is by the kana at the end of it. e.g. 楽しい、楽しみ
If you do something like Remembering the Kanji then you’ll be able to guess which kanji will be used for the word, since in many cases (not all) the meaning of the kanji is roughly the same as the word that kanji will be used for, so that can help. The more familiar you get with each kanji the easier it will be.
You might want to check out Read the Kanji (.com) I think it’s a much better resource than the kanji sections of this site. Really good for learning vocab and you get example sentences too.

Given all the stories about parades and floats I’d expect one of those to be honest!
So envious!
I’m getting close to finishing RTK which is great because I’m boring myself to death with it.
We are having dinner Saturday night, then Hyper Japan’ing on Sunday then I’m off home Monday. :) Should be a fun weekend, I don’t think we’re staying for long on Sunday in favour of London adventuring!
I’ve used the site on my phone like twice before just using the web browser and it worked perfectly, as for #3 you can already get many many many phrase books on iOS and Android to be fair.
Nah, there’s a bunch of different ways to get into uni without A-Levels. You can even get into uni with no qualifications in some cases, my friend did that for a literature course.
