My only ‘retro’ consoles are my PS2 and Dreamcast, kinda hard to call them retro I think, I mean the Dreamcast still looks quite good, look at this video from the Japanese version of Shenmue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P59BhyfweAU impressive for a 13 year old game I think. :D

and I have a PS3 which is basically a Blu-Ray player and my 360 which only gets used to play Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Super Street Fighter IV, I do most my gaming on PC really.

Edit: ok that’s it, that video made me want to play Shenmue, off to dust off the case I go. :D

My problem with both the NES and SNES is that the bulk of games are side scrollers with not a whole lot of variation, the N64 was mostly a failure with little third party support so its library kinda sucks, and hot damn the games for that thing were crazy expensive, the limitation of cartridges led to pretty poor 3D graphics too. The PS1 ran circles around it despite being 2-3 years older.

The Dreamcast was my favourite console of the 90s even if it was at the very end of the era, because Shenmue! I’m gonna replay Shenmue 2 soon, the Dreamcast version only has Japanese voice acting.

Two shows though! Kenan & Kel have to be a single entity, you can’t have one without the other!

The 90s to me was two things: Red Dwarf and Kenan & Kel.

Just finished ultimate nouns, really pleased that I got through the 3 lists within the time frame I wanted. Ended up being a bit quicker than I expected actually, just over 2 weeks I think.

I have limited exposure to Japanese food but the last time didn’t end well, my friend bought a tray of sushi and she told me to try some, I got given some cucumber flavoured variant and I felt like I was going to be sick until I got rid of the sushi in a bin. I should stop telling people I’m a fussy eater because it seems to make people want to give me food all the time. >:[

I wish I wasn’t so fussy, but 99% of the time if I don’t think I’ll like something I’m right. Statistics never lie!

I lost my recorded stats for a few decks last Thursday, the ultimate decks (except nouns) are the ones pushing the number up so high, so the last few days I’ve had to do a lot more on Anki than I usually would. It’ll even out by the end of this week, I’ve only had to do around 400 today.

Pressing space bar so many times is exhausting

Sit down and do everything at once, e.g. your routine, don’t space it out over the day or you might not feel like going back to it later.

I do 150 cards on Read the Kanji, cram 30 words and do around 700 reviews on Anki every day, I do this in one chunk then I have the rest of the day to lazy about and do whatever. It works for me, I haven’t had any problems with burning out. The only times I’ve semi-burnt out is when I get back from holiday; until everything is unpacked and back where it should be I have problems focusing, this didn’t just apply to Japanese, though, for 2-3 days I did very little in general and didn’t feel like playing games or watching TV either. I still did Anki reviews every day because I think that’s pretty effortless, you can just run through that while listening to music at your computer.

I finished ultimate adjectives and just took a look at ultimate nouns, was pretty pleased to find there’s only 5 groups to do, I’ll have that done today and then I can finish TextFugu and focus on grammar for a little while. I think I’ll start making my own Anki deck with around 40 useful phrases, after that I’ll just use Read the Kanji for vocabulary from here on.

All this vocab cramming has earned me some Skyrim. I’m off to be scared witless by virtual spiders.

Not being able to write English by hand wouldn’t be a disadvantage if you don’t live in a country where English is a main language. Unless irmoony has to handwrite Japanese because she either lives in Japan or has to do college/university assignments with handwritten kanji I doubt there’s any real benefit. Just learn the kanji first, then if you go to Japan take a writing class.

and being able to picture the kanji in your head will come in time, I couldn’t picture hiragana or katakana very well in my head at first, despite being able to identify them when already written down somewhere.

in reply to: What's the difference between いる and です #22188

いる is used to state the existence and presence of animate objects such as people, in that example です only states the existence.

So if you wanted to describe an attribute, use です if you want to state the existence and location of something (event, object) or someone (person, animal) you would use ある/いる, they can also be used to show possession.

I think that’s about right, I’m not 100% sure on it.

I started ultimate adjectives today and got around 30 done, which was easy because I knew half of them already, then did 150 cards on Read the Kanji and did a bunch of reviews on ultimate verbs. Quite nice to see the adjectives list is only 198 words long and I know almost half already from doing na and i adjectives in the past.

Should have this done by Thursday then I think I’ll take it easy for a few days just using Read the Kanji and doing reviews, then I’ll start ultimate nouns next Monday and once I finish those I’ll just be finishing off TextFugu and finishing this sentence pattern book.

I feel a lot better about Japanese than before, I was only doing a few words a day which was making the ultimate lists drag on so much, and I wasn’t doing any TextFugu lessons alongside them, so now that I am getting through the lists so much quicker I’m not worrying about doing straight vocab for a month.
