I saw the the posts I’m sure you are referring to, strikes me as a bit of an overreaction!

in reply to: So kun'yomi reading is the same as the word? #19700

For quite a lot of kanji the kun’yomi reading is the same as the word spelt out in kana, it seems like there’s some exceptions, but I’m seeing this often when looking up words now.

I sent off my university application for Japanese Studies / Japanese with Computer Science on Wednesday, pretty worried about getting in but if I don’t I’ll just have to do a lower level course for 9 months then re-apply next year, so it’s not all bad!

and I got back from New York, so right now I am doing lots of reviewing as I didn’t have much time to use Anki when I was away, going to start S5 soon!

If you have a PS3 changing the system language will impact some games, changing them to Japanese or so. Also if you make a Japanese PSN account you can easily purchase games from the Japanese store using pre-paid cards, or just download demos and what not.

It sucks that the 3DS isn’t region free. I’m just gonna wait for the PS Vita and import some games for that instead now.

I’m away from home in New York until next week so not doing much right now. I have my notepad with some stuff I revise here and there, and I’m using my い adjective deck on Anki when I’m on my laptop. When I get back I’m going to power through the rest of season 4 and work on 5 a lot!

…that’s if I don’t get ran over before I get home, New York drivers are cah-rayzeeeee.

Hiragana was about a week for me before I could recognise stuff fairly easily, I was using the Hiragana drag n’ drop exercise on a website I found quite a lot. Katakana was a lot faster, only took around 3-4 days! My katakana is weaker though, I’ve not had as much reading practice but that’ll come in time.

It’s really cool walking around New York and now being able to read some of the Japanese signs, like the ones at the World Trade Center memorial. :) It’s like a whole new world has opened up! I do get confused sometimes when I see Chinese because so much kanji is shared between them! >.<

I’m listening to the Guild Wars 2 developer talk from the Eurogamer Expo. I’m a little frightened as I can see myself neglecting Japanese a little bit when this game comes out. Hot damn it looks good.

    1. Increase the amount of kanji & kanji vocab I learn.
    2. I need to learn more ‘small talk’ so I can converse better with a Japanese friend that I made.
    3. I want to play the Japanese version of Persona 4 on the PS Vita when it comes out, so I’m hoping I’ll be able to understand some of it.
    4. Understand the particles と、も、で a little bit better than I do now.

I have about six months until that game comes out so I should be way more knowledgeable by then, if not I’ve done something wrong!

Persona 3 & 4 are amazing games. I’m going to import the PS Vita re-release of Persona 4 in Japanese next year.

Have you spoken to any Japanese people yet? I’ve been speaking to a few from Sharedtalk, they’re so nice!

I type in Romaji and Google IME converts it to Hiragana or Katakana depending what I have selected, on my Mac I use Kotoeri for a similar effect. :)
