I don’t write anything down, I just use the iKnow phone/tablet/web apps daily, I generally remember stuff. As for the kanji then I usually remember those quite well, but of course it takes a while to start recognising them quickly on sight, it depends on the words really because some compounds stand out more than others. (I think)

While doing the Core decks, write Lang-8 posts using some of the new words, that will help you remember the kanji further.

I did RTK and I feel like you should just ditch it and do Core all the way, I wish I did.

@winter There’s definitely a lot of kanji I recognise really easily now, but at the same time I’m not sure if that is really helping too much. Learning words with 2 or more kanji that you already know seems helpful, but at the same time if I didn’t spend time doing RTK and just did vocab it feels like I’d have seen more benefit in a way.

I’m not sure if I’d recommend it or not really, it’s really boring and takes a pretty long time, I feel brute forcing kanji through vocab might be a better option, that’s what I’m doing now as I gave up on RTK at around 2000 kanji in, it got soooooooooooo boring.

I am with missing, I did RTK and really it feels like I should have just done vocab all that time instead. I’m tempted to ditch doing my reviews every day for it because it’s not really doing anything for me, although I don’t get many reviews a day so it’s not taking up much time.

Not to be a negative Nancy but…

That’s 1 lesson in 2 months. I feel bad for people paying monthly, hopefully more of the lessons planned for this month do make it to the current version. Right now the monthly membership seems kind of a bad deal.

I don’t think you should wait for Wani Kani when there’s stuff like Read the Kanji (.com) out there, I don’t know how good Wani will be, but unless it’s coming out real soon then I would check out the site I just mentioned instead.

…or just do Heisig’s book, I did that instead of the above website because it started to get much harder when it kept giving me words with 2 or more kanji I didn’t know all the time. After though the website is very good.

Same thing with iKnow, it’s a lot easier to take in all that kanji when you know most of them individually.

    姦しい

Kanji with 3 women in it, word meaning noisy. I found this hilarious.

Kanji vocab is easier once you know the kanji quite well individually. That’s kinda why I went through RTK. (Remembering the Kanji)

I’m looking forward to the new lessons because I’ve been doing almost nothing but vocab for a month now. \o/ I should probably look at the sections on sentence enders in my particle book but they don’t seem too that important atm, maybe that’s a bad way to look at it?

I think this would have the opposite effect on me, I’ll try it at at the college gym sometime, but then again I’d look like a bit of a mong running while trying to do reviews on my iPad, typing would be annoying!

Same reasons as Elenkis for me, another thing is I use 4 different devices each on different OSes and getting all of them to stay in sync complete with media can be a bit annoying and sometimes I’ve had Anki lose small pieces of sync data, so the iKnow web based and mobile apps solve that problem so far.

I doubt I’ll renew as I should be well versed with all of their content by the time it expires next April, if I’m still not great with recalling core6k stuff I’ll drop another 6 months down on it and after that I can probably cancel. This is assuming no new core decks show up!

@Michael picking them up as I go along sounds good. Guess I’ll have to make my own decks or something, damn it, that’s totally effort! I doubt I’ll finish 6k by the end of the year but I think aiming for January/Feb is doable, thanks though!

Ah I get it! Hmm yeah you are right, I guess they are just talking about day to day conversation or something which I could sort of see as being at least half true. Not sure what I’ll do when I finish core6k, probably around the end of the year I’ll hit that maybe. Wonder where else I can go for vocab that isn’t just going to repeat most of what I’ve already done? Not looking forward to figuring that out!

@Michael I do 30 a day because if I do more I get drowned in reviews I think, 30 is a good enough pace for iKnow, it means I can get around one step done every 3/4 days! (each part of core is divided into 10 steps)

I might toy with bumping it up to like 40 because according to the website finishing core3k should give you enough to read “most” Japanese text without a dictionary, kinda excited to get to that level. (I’m really sceptical of that though!)

Actually on the iKnow site core1k, 2k, 3k and so on are all blocks of 1000 words each, how the hell are you getting 4000 words for just core6k?!

and I like that book, looks really high quality.

I’m 60% through Core2k now, will finish by the end of this month, then I’m gonna try and get 3k done by August and after that I’m going to chill on vocab for a short while to study the remaining particles.

When I did ultimate vocab you could enable the kana/kanji cards in the group options.

I don’t know if it has changed much now but I don’t recommend the ultimate decks, I thought they did a pretty bad job at differentiating between trans/intransitive and other words that are similar to one another.
