I only considered myself as “knowing” hiragana and katakana when I got to a point where I can read them almost as fast as English. (I can definitely read hiragana as fast)

All this learning them in a day stuff just seems odd to me, that’s just being able to tell which is which, it takes longer to truly get used to them, no matter how much you cram in a day.

That drag and drop exercise is all I used for hiragana and katakana, it was pretty great.

I just use the dash key, to type the small characters I type xtsu / xi and so on, I’m using Google IME but this also works on my Mac using kotoeri.

@Michael it’s just one of those things I kept meaning to have clarified but kept forgetting to post about or lookup, probably because katakana is rarer.

and that’s what I get for skipping the TextFugu part on katakana!

Right thanks, it’s nice to have that clarified, I should’ve made this post 8 months ago!

I did nothing but RTK and really regret it, I’d rather have taken longer to learn kanji while doing some grammar on the side. Oh well, now I can focus purely on grammar, it feels like I’m making progress again.

I’m still quite bitter about doing it. I know it definitely helped me learn a lot of kanji quite fast but it was so boring and I learnt very little (aside from kanji) during that time so I sometimes I feel I could have done so much more by learning grammar and posting on Lang-8 a lot.

One tip, if you do it and use the koohii website don’t be lazy like me, fill in the stories on the website when doing reviews. I started doing it at around kanji #1300 and it helped a lot, definitely wish I did that to begin with. Oops.

Kanji vocab is why I did RTK, it’s way easier to remember compounds when you know the meaning of the kanji by themselves…I think it is at least. Some of them make sense when put together so that in itself reminds you of what the word is.

Though it should be stated sometimes the “raw” meaning of a kanji does not always show up in a word you’d expect it to.

Well lately I’ve been playing Yakuza Kenzan which is entirely in Japanese, no subs, so that has been pretty difficult, them games are extremely dialog heavy. I also listen to Japanese podcasts when doing other stuff.

I have definitely learned some stuff from playing Yakuza 3 and 4 (which are also in Japanese, but have English subs) so I think it’s worth trying to find some Japanese media to enjoy. I don’t watch any anime because there’s only one series I’ve really enjoyed (Angel Beats) I find most anime drags on like crazy. Just look at Bleach! One battle can span 6 episodes. Haha.

I’m a bit concerned thinking about it now actually, if the kanji section of this website is still going to be getting updated, along with this new site, doesn’t that mean new lessons will take even longer? I guess it doesn’t bother me too much but seems a legitimate concern!

There’s still quite a lot of kanji I forget despite doing RTK, it’s the more “busy” ones that catch me out, give it another month of reviewing every day and I’ll probably be just fine though. I’ve been posting a lot on Lang-8 so by actually using kanji that helps me remember them much better too.

I do think it’s a little odd to launch a new site when work here is kinda slow. I’m not gonna use it because I’ve also done RTK and now I just learn compounds through iKnow. It’ll have to be something special to be better than http://readthekanji.com too
