To drive this stuff home you have to try and make use of the words you are learning, it helps a hell of a lot. Use Lang-8 more even if it’s for incredibly simple stuff.
I think it’s so some countries can’t import games for cheaper, I can’t really see any other reasoning behind it. I know a lot of people in Europe import games from the UK instead of their own countries because of price differences.
What really baffles me is that Nintendo didn’t even include a multi-voltage charger for the 3DS. The hell is up with that? So you have to buy an additional charger if you want to charge a portable device abroad? Get real Nintendo…
Nintendo always come out with some really backwards crap. I know you can charge it via USB but I don’t think they include one of those cables either. I don’t remember getting one with my 3DS.

For the actual 3DS it’s pretty poor because of region locking, if you get an R4 card there’s some decent DS learning games you can try out, or just play Japanese games. I’m sure the 3DS will get hacked soon enough, region locking is just stupid.
I’m trying to get through it as fast as I can. Since signing up around 12 days ago I’m on step 8 of Core 1000, if I can finish 3000 by the end of May I’ll be pretty happy. It’s a bit easier for me maybe because I already know around 2000 kanji. (on their own, not compounds)
The book I posted is on Amazon, I was annoyed when I went back to my bookmark to find it out of stock. It was definitely a little slow coming from Book Depository, blergh.

I had no idea that there was:
A) So many particles
B) That が has so many uses- This reply was modified 12 years, 8 months ago by Luke.
I think like most things you can find free workarounds, but a premium service will usually give you a better level of service and I think that rings true for iKnow. I’m liking it quite a lot so far, it’s a bit boring as I know the majority of Core1k so I’m blazing through it pretty quickly! The sentences are really nice, I’m reading a book with “every” Japanese particle so it’s making me remember stuff from that too.
It’s also kind of motivational as I had no idea I knew over 500 words already.

That is true, I don’t mind not running an AV on my Mac, mostly because I never do any downloading from newsgroups/torrents so the chances of me getting a virus are pretty slim, so long as you use a decent web browser eh.
tbh I could probably just remove my AV on Windows and get along fine, but as there’s sooooooo many more viruses out there for Windows I’ll keep it just in case.

Of course you can build a desktop better and cheaper than a MacBook, you can do the same with Windows desktops and laptops…any Alienware laptop for example can easily be beaten by a custom desktop machine for cheaper.
They’re worth it for the laptops unless you are seriously tied to certain apps on Windows. (that you couldn’t just run in a VM)
@Mark I don’t think the App Store will ever be good unless they add DirectX to OS X. Games on OS X run so bad compared to Windows, SC2 on my old MacBook ran very smooothly on high under Windows, then on OS X even medium was a struggle.
Mac laptops are worth the extra price, very few Windows laptops cram in a good battery, good screen, good keyboard and most importantly – a fantastic trackpad.
As for the desktops…then I prefer a PC. I only really like OS X on laptops because the gestures are what make that OS for me.
@kanjiman8 that’s not really true because most of the video/photo editing software is available on both OS X and Windows, so you’re not actually gaining anything by buying a Mac, it’ll still run roughly the same too. Final Cut is now kind of loathed so a lot of people have shifted to Adobe Premiere which is multiplatform

It’s actually quite simple but it is a bit confusing at first and you have to be careful, you’ll get used to it.
You can get the raw vocabulary but the overall experience is much better using their website.
Funnily enough I signed up to iKnow this morning and it’s pretty great. Love having everything synced across my phone, iPad and any web browser. Vocab is my weak point right now too, so doing all the core stuff is going to be nice.

Thanks, was looking for some Japanese podcasts.
While not in Japanese, Stuff You Should Know have some excellent podcasts on Samurai and Ninja for anyone interested in that stuff, that podcast is worth subbing to anyway!

Instead of Anki you can use http://kanji.koohii.com for RTK, the only problem is it’s not updated to the latest version of the book so you’re going to be a little mixed up and you’ll end up missing some kanji out. All that means is you’ll have to learn around 100 or so left out kanji, but that’s pretty easy if you think about it.
The website goes along fairly well with the book, it’s only later on (1600+ I think) where you’ll notice a few kanji here and there that are in the book, but not on the website.
