no time like the present to start learning kanji! :) It’s very slow at first too, so you’ll have plenty of time to study other things.

it’s also better organized and the order that kanji are taught is better too because it doesn’t go in order of number of strokes, but instead it builds off the radicals.

So like Heisig’s style of ordering? For the longest time, Koichi championed the “fewest strokes to most strokes” ordering; I guess he’s realised that way wasn’t actually that good after all.

Hmm, well it still is smaller stroke amounts to bigger in a way. (ive never used heisig so i cant compare) First its small radicals, then it’s kanji that use those (which arent very big yet) but it’s also more common kanji first, even if a kanji is only a couple strokes, we won’t learn it til later if it isn’t important or common enough. So it’s a mix of “less strokes first” + “more common first” + “learning kanji that use a certain radical shortly after learning said radical” if that makes sense… :p

    Thanks for the input Joel.

If that’s the case, I’d guess it’s because both systems are designed by the same source, with wanikani as the more thorough and most recently-updated project from that source. Like the PS2 vs PS3. Sound about right?

    this is about right.
they have some differences from each other (like, with radicals) so it’s easier to stick with only ONE of them. And WK is the better option (if you’re willing to spend the money) and it’s better in a few ways:
the srs system makes learning fun and convenient
more accurate/more content/more actively improved upon and updated.
it’s also better organized and the order that kanji are taught is better too because it doesn’t go in order of number of strokes, but instead it builds off the radicals.

personally i stopped using TF kanji once i started WK (actually, maybe even before then.. hehe lazy..)

Well then, that sounds all right :P If I could be bothered learning kanji readings, I might just have tried it haha.

Do you mean that you only learn how to pronounce words, and not the common readings for individual kanji? just curious :D

    The basic rules are:
kunyomi is used when alone OR with hiragana attached (so when not combined with other kanji)
onyomi is used when combined with other kanji
However, these rules are only basic and there are MANY exceptions. So the rules become almost useless anyway.

It’s probably easier to just learn the vocab words. Or use WaniKani :D

WK is separate, though TF users get a discount I believe

@zeldaskitten: “active and updated often” are words I’d say described TextFugu back when I started, and look at it now :P Not that you can be *100%* sure it’ll go the same way, but it’s something to be wary of at least. I guess he’s got Viet to work on it too though; when Hashi was hired, he did do a little here on TextFugu but he was mostly working on writing for Tofugu, I think. Still, I’d rather they finish something before they release it for a change – being in alpha for years is always going to be risky.

Well, WK has been up for over a year and it’s still going strong. Also, The amount of content is less than TF would be, I think, so it’s actually almost done, as far as the basic lessons are concerned. They say about 50 levels is what there will be when it’s complete and they’ve got up to the mid 40′s made already. Of course there’s still much work to do with constant improvements and stuff.. (and adding new features..) But I would definitely say that WK is way closer to being ‘finished’ than TF is. I’m sure some of the reasons for this are that:
it’s all one format, and one thing being learned, which makes it easier to make.
Viet is on top of his game
kanji is easier to teach since ‘grammar’ is much more abstract and complex where kanji is one specific type of thing you’re learning

In general, WK just has a great vibe, and things are going well over there. I really can’t see it having the same issues as TF since it’s close to complete already and they’ve kept their word so far about staying ahead of the highest level user.

WK is active and updated often, and the top member always has new stuff to learn (they stay ahead of him by releasing new stuff in time)

    I recommend it :D

If you’re using WK, then yes, ignore the kanji sections in TF. :)

A big update is coming?! I didn’t even know about it :O

I just checked it out right now,it says under “Next:”–> “I’m hoping 20 or so lessons geared towards intermediate to advanced self-study. Maybe more, maybe less, but that’s the goal.”

    There is hope :D<br>
Now I hope my mail didn’t reach him,or it will slow him down xD

nah, i think he definitely should read it :)

I agree with your post. I feel like browsing through lessons is tough because there’s so many pages of “hand holding” material. If I want to find a specific grammar point i have to check each page which takes forever (they used to be titled, right?) And the sentences DO all use the same vocab words most of the time. Never really thought about that but it’s very true.

However, since this “big update” is coming “soon” maybe this won’t even be an issue anymore. But who knows, really… DOES ANYONE KNOW?! Maybe he’s going to copy and paste it all into a new layout or something.

No the forums at WK are waaaaay better! (different software) I mean not 100% perfect but they look prettier and there’s an extension you can download that improves on them too. (lots of API related things happen over there where the users can improve on things in the site)
They are so lively that I usually don’t read everything. Actually I never read EVERYTHING, I’d be there ALL DAY!

Koichi DOES show his face… but not so often. More often than here though! (meaning, it DOES happen..) I think only on posts he finds really important for the most part.. Or if we email him and demand he come on and respond to something lol.
Viet posts more than Koichi (well, since Viet is the site programmer and all and posts updates and whatnot)
