So, since a lot of you have moved on what are YOU using now? Besides textfugu, and why? Are there any other communities out there worth joining?

The WaniKani forum is quite lively and although a lot of posts are about WK specifically (duh) there are plenty of other japanese related posts and lots of people helping each other with the language. (and lots of off-topic stuff too, but you can just ignore that…)
Anyway I think you still need an invite to join…? but if you do join, you don’t have to pay to use the forums since levels 1 and 2 are free and you can use the forums at those levels.

Your post is very wonderful, but I can say with confidence that Koichi did not read this at all.

    +1

You should email your post to him :)

while i do agree that he pays no attention to textfugu anymore, i do still think he does the right thing when money is involved, or at least when you can finally get a hold of him to tell him.  i wouldn’t be surprised if he refunded you every penny (of course, my thoughts don’t MEAN that he will)  I just think that’s how he usually is.  I remember him giving full refund guarantees and such. So even if it takes a while and you get charged again, I’d bet you get it back  (here’s to hoping, anyway)  good luck!

oh and about the forums, i THINK they are usable for everyone except the super secret sections (that we used to have those practice lessons on…  RIP to those…)

I find it odd that there’s no simple way to cancel your account.  I wouldn’t know since I started waaaaay back when and am a forever member..  But don’t most sites have an ‘account’ section that let’s you cancel?

Try making an anki list (or any other form of flash cards or study list) of work-related vocabulary words.  And just try to think of them while working.  Maybe thinking small sentences about what you’re doing.  Or learn what sort of convos Japanese people would be having while giving food / taking orders etc.  Some basic phrases like enjoy your meal, or what would you like to order, etc.    you can think about them (but don’t accidentally start talking in Japanese to your customers lol)

Do you deal with numbers?  like with money or inventory or anything?  I’ve gotten great at counting in Japanese by practicing at work (but I count quite a bit at work)  Of course, if you’re too much a beginner then you should also count in English so nothing important gets messed up  :p

If you get bored with co-workers names, try writing other words in katakana.  like food items, or customer’s names.  Or the name of the restaurant.  Even if they aren’t real words, sometimes it’s fun to katakana-ize words.

anyway those are my thoughts.  sort of what i do at work.  i also have one co-worker who is learning Japanese also which is nice when we can converse about grammar or say simple sentences to each other.

i think 才 is used only when handwriting “years old” and for kids to use because it’s easier.  The more common kanji for “years old” is 歳 though.

whenever I really wanna search the forum, I use google.  But usually I have to google HOW to use google first since I forget cuz I don’t do it often.  of course this isn’t too helpful to most people.  Unless they use google to search the forum to find out how to use google to search the forum.  Hahaha…  Seriously though, if they can’t do a search function, then at least a stickied note about how to search with  google would be better than nothing…
